This isn’t just the easiest dessert on earth; it’s also the most delicious. Seriously: it’s only got five ingredients! And you can use any apples you have around. Using dried cranberries does two cool things here: they add a beautiful bright tartness, and the also soak up some of the apple juices. Perfect.
I often joke that this is the kind of dessert that could “seal the deal” should a person be making dinner for a sweetheart. It’s totally comfort food but also it’s somehow terribly elegant.
I always serve this with both vanilla ice cream and what my British husband calls “pouring cream” — coffee cream or whatever’s in the fridge.
Here’s the full how-to:
Apple-Cranberry Crisp
INGREDIENTS
¾ cup (165 g) packed brown sugar
½ cup (75 g) all-purpose flour
½ cup (115 g) butter, very cold from the fridge or freezer
6 medium apples (any type - or a mix)
⅓ cup dried unsweetened cranberries
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 375F.
To make the topping, stir the brown sugar with the flour in a large bowl.Grate in the cold butter using the large holes of a box grater. Toss the mixture to combine it and coat all the butter with the dry mixture.
Peel and slice the apples. Put the slices into a 9-inch pie plate (or any similar-sized basking dish) and stir in the cranberries. Sprinkle the butter mixture evenly overtop.
Place the pie plate on a baking sheet, then bake 35 to 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly at the edges. Serve warm with ice cream or pouring cream.
