Dinner, but make it uncomplicated.
I started writing Dinner, Uncomplicated when I was on tour for my first book, Uncomplicated. Time and again, at events, on podcasts and on TV, I heard the same struggle: Working parents are burdened by their family’s daily dinner ritual. So was I.
Our son was six, my partner worked 40 minutes drive away, I was darting between cities and events. Every dinner time felt like a scramble, and I hated it. I needed to make a change.
I love eating dinner with my family, but I want need the whole process to be joyful instead of stressful. I built Dinner, Uncomplicated to be an practical (easy, fun and delicious) guide to getting dinner on the table.
The rewards of a home-cooked dinner are tremendous. It improves physical and mental health, plus the health of our finances, family relationships and our planet all at the same time! That’s a heck of an impact from a plate of pasta (or a bowl of chili or an amazing burger or. . .).
But best of all, for me, having a daily dinner ritual brings more happiness into my life. When I eat with the people I love (whether I do the cooking or not!), I feel better, no matter what the world threw at me that day—and they feel better too!
Of course the trouble is pulling it off.
The number one complaint I heard from readers, neighbours, friends and family is that we don’t have TIME. We’re so busy, and just trying to fuel ourselves and our kids before flying off to hockey practice or euchre night or piano lessons.
Yes. I see you.
With that in mind, I structured the book’s chapters to tackle that very crisis: Got 10 minutes before shuffling a kiddo to karate class? How about a Sunday with no commitments, but a jam-packed week looms large? Or maybe you just walked in the door and everyone needs to eat, like now. Relax. I’ve got you covered.
This book builds you a system for getting a tasty, home-cooked meal on the table most night of the week. This book is all dinners - solutions for every night of the week, whether you’ve got almost no time, a whole day to shop and cook or anything in between. You’ll also find extensive suggestions and ideas for wasting less food, raising healthy eaters, planning meals and countless ways to make all your cooking faster, easier and more delicious.
Sharing a meal with the people I love brings me more joy than anything else. Truly. Whether it’s lightning-fast tacos or a slow-cooked lasagna, you’ll never regret ending the day with a sit-down meal.
We can do this. Let’s fix dinner.
